At Bassingbourn, our curriculum is everything we want children to learn, experience and remember during their time with us.
In Reception, we follow the EYFS Statutory Framework, where play, exploration and high-quality interactions lay strong foundations. From Years 1 to 6, we follow the National Curriculum, enriched by a wide range of experiences in and beyond the classroom.
What shapes our curriculum?
As a village primary school, we serve Bassingbourn and its neighbouring communities, alongside many families connected to the Armed Forces. Together, our families bring a wide range of experiences, which enrich our school and shape what we plan for.
- Our village setting: fields, farms and local heritage on our doorstep
- Close to Cambridge: opportunities in science, culture and the arts that broaden children's horizons and open up new possibilities
- Armed Forces families: children who join us at different points, bringing wide experience of other places
- Mixed-age classes: learning carefully sequenced so every child builds securely, whenever they join us
With this in mind, four principles guide every curriculum decision:
- Strong foundations: early reading, language, number and learning habits are secured first, so children can approach new learning with confidence
- Coherently sequenced: knowledge and skills build step by step and are revisited regularly, so children remember more over time
- Inclusive and ambitious: every child accesses a rich curriculum, with teaching adapted so all feel supported and challenged
- Rooted locally, connected globally: learning starts with our own village, then connects to the wider world and other subjects, so children can make meaningful links in their learning
