Science
At Bassingbourn, we want pupils to be curious about the world and confident to ask questions and find the answers for themselves. Through science, pupils build their knowledge of the living and physical world and learn to think and work like scientists.
How we teach science
We teach science using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum. From Year 1, pupils have a science lesson every week, building their knowledge alongside the skills of working scientifically. Our classes are mixed-age, so units follow a two-year rolling programme.
In Reception, science is part of Understanding the World, as children explore the natural world around them, observing plants, animals, the seasons and how things change.
What pupils learn
Pupils study a broad range of topics as they move through the school:
-
Plants, animals and their habitats
-
The human body and staying healthy
-
Materials and how they change
-
Forces, Earth and space
-
Light, sound and electricity
Alongside this, pupils learn to ask questions, plan fair tests, measure carefully, record their results and draw conclusions. They also find out about scientists past and present, such as Mary Anning and Jane Goodall, and the many jobs that use science. Each year ends with a "Making connections" investigation, such as "How reflective are space blankets?", bringing their learning together.
Science for every pupil
In science, practical activities and clear models help every pupil take part and succeed. Key vocabulary is taught explicitly, and knowledge organisers support pupils as they learn. For pupils with SEND, teachers adapt equipment, resources and ways of recording, such as photographs or labelled diagrams. For those ready for more challenge, teachers encourage them to plan their own investigations, explain their reasoning and pose further questions.
Beyond the classroom
This year, we are launching our first STEAM Week, where pupils bring science, technology, engineering, art and maths together through creative projects. Pupils will also share their own investigations with families and friends at our first Science Fair. Trips and visitors throughout the year bring science to life and show pupils how it is used in the world around them.
