Art and Design

At Bassingbourn, we want every pupil to see themselves as an artist, with the confidence to experiment, take creative risks and share their ideas.  Through art and design, pupils develop practical skills, learn about a wide range of artists, craft makers and designers, and find their own creative voice.

How we teach art and design

We teach art and design using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum.  Across the year, art alternates with design and technology, so each unit is taught as a focused block.  Our classes are mixed-age, so units follow a two-year rolling programme.

In Reception, art is part of Expressive Arts and Design, as children explore drawing, paint, collage and modelling, and talk about what they have made.

What pupils learn

Each year, pupils build their skills across five areas:

  • Drawing

  • Painting and mixed media

  • Sculpture and 3D

  • Craft and design, such as weaving, printing and textiles

  • Generating ideas in sketchbooks

Pupils learn to use the formal elements of art: line, shape, colour, pattern, texture, tone, form and space.  They study the work of artists, craft makers and designers from different times and cultures, and explore why people make art.  In sketchbooks, pupils try out ideas, experiment with materials and reflect on their work.

Art for every pupil

In art, there are many ways to respond creatively, so every pupil can experience success.  Teachers model techniques step by step and adapt tools, materials and scale, for example using chunkier brushes, pre-cut shapes or larger paper.  Lessons are adapted for pupils with SEND, so they can take part fully.  For those ready for more challenge, teachers encourage independent choices of media, deeper research into artists and more ambitious outcomes.

Beyond the classroom

This year, we are launching our first STEAM Week, where pupils bring art together with science, technology, engineering and maths through creative projects.  At our art club, pupils can develop their skills further, and gallery visits give them the chance to see artists' work first-hand.
