PSHE and RSE

At Bassingbourn, we want every pupil to understand themselves, care for their health and wellbeing, and build kind, respectful relationships.  Through personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), pupils gain the knowledge and confidence to stay safe, make good choices and play a positive part in their community.

How we teach PSHE and RSE

We teach PSHE, including relationships and health education, using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which meets the statutory guidance for relationships, sex and health education.  Every class has a weekly lesson, and our classes are mixed-age, so units follow a two-year rolling programme.  Lessons take place in a safe, supportive space with clear ground rules.

In Reception, PSHE is part of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, as children learn about their feelings, friendships and looking after themselves.

What pupils learn

As they move through the school, pupils learn about:

  • Families, friendships and respectful relationships

  • Physical and mental health and wellbeing

  • Staying safe, including first aid and online safety

  • Growing up, including the changes of puberty

  • Citizenship, money and the wider world

Sex education is taught to Year 6 pupils only, every summer term, as they learn how people become parents and carers.  In our mixed Year 5 and 6 class, Year 5 pupils study a different unit at this time.

PSHE for every pupil

In PSHE, stories, scenarios and discussion help every pupil explore ideas in a safe way.  Teachers adapt lessons to pupils' needs, for example using visual resources, small-group work or extra time to reflect.  Lessons are adapted for pupils with SEND, so they can take part fully and confidently.  For those ready for more challenge, teachers encourage deeper discussion and independent reflection.

Working with families

Parents and carers are welcome to see the materials we use.  Relationships education and health education are part of the statutory curriculum for every pupil.  Parents and carers can withdraw their child from sex education in Year 6.  If you would like to find out more, please contact the school office.
